U.S. Barista Championship

US Barista Championship

The U.S. Barista Championship

The United States Barista Championship (USBC) is a platform for baristas to enhance their espresso beverage making skills through an exciting and challenging competition. In 15 minutes, the barista must prepare and serve espressos, cappuccinos, and a personally designed signature beverage for four sensory judges; all while being assessed on their preparation abilities by two technical judges. The USBC is more than a competition; it’s a place to develop community and meet other coffee lovers from across the US. Baristas from across the country will compete in one regional competition to qualify for this national event. The winner of the USBC will go on to represent the United States in the World Barista Championship at World of Coffee in Dublin, Ireland, June 2016.

Road to the U.S. Barista Championship

Regional Qualifying Event

One qualifying 4 day event will take place this winter in the geographic center of the country.

The Western Conference will take place on days 1 & 2. The Eastern Conference will take place on days 3 & 4. There will be 100 total spots for competitors.

  • The top 6 barista competitors from the Western Conference and the top 6 from the Eastern Conference will be determined. Each of these 12 will automatically advance to USBC semi-finals.
  • The 24 remaining highest scoring baristas from the entire country will advance to the initial round of the USBC.
  • The regional barista qualifying competition will be a condensed version of the full USBC. We envision 2 espressos, 2 milk based drinks, and 2 signature drinks served to 2 sensory judges with 2 technical judges and 1 head judge. There will be a 20 minute practice period, a prep time of 10 minutes and performance time of 10 minutes. The competitions committee will update scoring sheets and rules documents accordingly.
  • Judge: Do you have a strong barista background or relevant coffee tasting experience? Are you looking to become involved in the regional barista competition? Becoming certified as a U.S. Coffee Championships (USCC) Regional Judge provides you an opportunity to be involved at the center of the competition while helping to advance your overall espresso knowledge. At all of our regional coffee competitions, our pool of judges plays an integral part in determining each of our regional champions. It is a serious commitment that provides access to some of the most innovative coffee preparation techniques in the specialty coffee community!
