April 25, 2018: Details on a scorekeeping error at the 2018 U.S. Roasting Championship.
In the spirit of full transparency, the staff and volunteers of the 2018 USRC would like to provide some details on a scorekeeping error that affected two of our competitors, and the resolution reached.
Scores for the U.S. Roaster Championship are entered into an Excel spreadsheet by a scorekeeper volunteer. The scorekeeping tabulator is created and maintained by the National Competitions Manager for each competition season and automatically calculates each competitor’s score. Last season, the Flavor Descriptor and Accuracy category on the Presentation scoresheets was multiplied by 2. This season, the Rules were updated, and the multiplier on Flavor Descriptor and Accuracy was removed and a 2 times multiplier was added to the Roast Knowledge category. While the scoresheets and Rules were updated, the multiplier in the USRC scorekeeping tabulator was not moved in the Excel formula. Unfortunately, this was not caught until after the conclusion of the competition.
The National Competitions Manager and WCE Representatives updated the formula to accurately reflect the correct multipliers. While the Presentation scores for the Top 6 Finalists changed, the ranking order did not change. However, when the Presentation scores were updated for Round One, the rankings changed slightly and we discovered that two competitors who should have advanced to Finals did not. SCA Staff and our WCE Reps discussed the error and reached out to the affected competitors immediately to explain the error.
To make up for the miscalculation, we offered the two competitors a free entry into the 2019 USRC. The two competitors very graciously accepted the free entry. Once again, we apologize to the two competitors, thank them for their kindness, and assure all competitors that we will do our best to avoid errors like these in the future.
